Challenge:

Desert Premium Logistics (DPL), a 3PL provider based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, offers warehousing, distribution, and transportation solutions across multiple industries. A key part of their business also includes handling secure product destruction on behalf of customers.

Like many logistics companies, DPL generates a high volume of loose, bulky packaging waste—cardboard, shrink wrap, and pallets. Their open-top dumpsters were constantly overflowing, due to delays from an unresponsive, unreliable hauler.

The result: inefficiencies, frustrated staff, and missed opportunities to reduce costs for customers.

Solution:

Stephen Cummings, DPL’s Vice President of Operations, connected with Smash My Trash to find a better way. After evaluating DPL’s waste flow, the Albuquerque Smash team recommended a bi-weekly mobile waste compaction schedule.

Just two smashes a month drastically reduced the volume of waste, allowing DPL to delay hauls from weekly to once every six or seven weeks. The added benefit? Faster and more secure product destruction services for their customers.

We’ve gone from emptying the dumpster every week to maybe once a month or every six weeks,” Cummings said. “We hold a lot of materials for our customers, so if they need that stock destroyed we can call up Smash and they’ll take care of it. We get to pass those savings on to our customers”

Results:
